IELTS Academic Reading Overview

The IELTS Academic Reading test assesses a wide range of reading skills, including your ability to understand gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, and inferences. It consists of three long texts which range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical, taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. These are selected for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking professional registration.

Test Format

• Duration: 60 minutes (including the time it takes to transfer your answers from your question booklet to your answer sheet).
• Number of Questions: 40 questions.
• Number of Sections: 3 sections; the total text length is 2,150–2,750 words.

Question Types

A variety of question types are used to assess a wide range of reading skills. These include:

• Multiple Choice: Test your ability to understand specific points or overall understanding of the main points of the text.
• Identifying Information (True/False/Not Given): Assess your ability to recognize particular points of information in the text.
• Identifying Writer’s Views/Claims (Yes/No/Not Given): Determine your ability to recognize opinions or ideas in the text.
• Matching Information: Evaluate your ability to scan for specific information.
• Matching Headings: Test your ability to identify the main idea or theme of paragraphs or sections of a text.
• Matching Features: Assess your ability to connect information in the text to a list of options.
• Matching Sentence Endings: Evaluate your understanding of how ideas in the text are connected.
• Sentence Completion: Test your ability to find details/specific information within a text.
• Summary, Note, Table, Flow-Chart Completion: Assess your ability to understand details and/or the main ideas of a section of the text.
• Diagram Label Completion: Evaluate your ability to relate descriptions in the text to information presented in a diagram.
• Short-Answer Questions: Test your ability to locate and understand precise information in the text.

Scoring

Each correct answer receives 1 mark. Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are reported in whole and half bands.
